charcoal, newsprint, scrap paper
This charcoal drawing shows Ryu Gwansun in her dying moments, executed by firing squad, with her throat slit and a bullet wound to the head. Surrounding her are bullet holes in the wall against which she stands, made of newsprint—representing the resurrection of Ryu Gwansun and her heroism during the struggle for Korean Independence through the spreading of ideas that newspapers facilitate. “Overlooked No More” is the title of a New York Times article published earlier this year detailing Ryu Gwansun’s contributions.
